FA: An E. F. Johnson Viking Kilowatt "Matchbox" - probably the King of
all the HF antenna couplers that were ever made. It will probably
handle 10 KW with ease. 1950's vintage, with the optional SWR meter/
remote coupler and the internal antenna relay (which has been bypassed
for straight-through operation.) Tunes coax, balanced line and
single-wire antennas.
This is the one that people used to "load up the bedsprings" with -
yes, I tried that, just so I could say that I did it! I made a few out
of state contacts with the "bedsprings" antenna, and also loaded up a
few other things like an aluminum ladder, a window screen, a metal
rain gutter, etc. What hams won't do for fun?! I guess I've spent too
much time reading those Kurt N. Sterba antenna articles in
_Worldradio_ magazine.
