What is this old method?

The old method was to add "Newsgroups" to your favorites, then either
download them or read them one at a time.
With later versions until 9.0, you could automatically download them into
your e-mail filing cabinet. That was taken away with version 9.0

Thankfully I can access it through my SBC DSL account.

If you have SBC DSL, why do you even bother with AOL?

Because I have been with AOL since the days of the DOS/GeoWorks days. I use
the them for different things. AOL is more for personal stuff, and the DSL
account is for business purposes. And because I have SBC DSL, I was able to
get AOL for a chaper monthly price.
