Yes, the antenna had to have a wide diameter, since it wasn't very deep, it
needed many segments to telescope out to its 8 feet or so of height. ISTR I
could set my Mohican on the floor and the antenna tip still brushed the
ceiling. It was impressive.
About like a tube Zenith Trans-O, maybe even longer, and more rugged.

Sorry to hear your set worked right off the bat and spoiled your fun :-) :-)
Now if someone would swap their "no fun" R390A for my "tons o' fun" version ...
