The R-7000 remains a favorite of collectors, however. Produced in small
numbers for only three years, it is one of the scarcest TransOceanics. Only
75,000 in total were produced, as compared to several hundred thousand of
the tube models. Moreover, as the last of its line, the R-7000 has an appeal
similar to the first TransOceanic, the 7G605 Clipper, for anyone wishing to
fill out a TransOceanic collection. Most importantly, it's an excellent
portable multi-band receiver, with features and performance that reflect
Zenith's three decades of TransOceanic development

I believe it was made in Chicago, the last portable radio to be made in
the US. After that, Zenith just made TVs in the American plant, but
those were shut down too (about a decade later, I believe) and
production shifted to Asia. Today, Zenith is just a name to be rented
out, like the rest of them.

Original price: $379.95 from 1979-1981

Ouch! No wonder so few were made. Remember that inflation was 13% at the
time, and unemployment was 10% (high for America). I doubt few people
had the means to purchase one. And if they did, they probably went for a
color TV instead (about the same price).

Besides what do you care how folks spend their money ?

Remember that collectors have very different motives for wanting a
certain item than users. This radio wouldn't be much good to a daily
user, a Degen 1102 would be better than this. But there are people who
collect just TOs, and to them it would be worth a lot. I think that ebay
has really helped the collector markets, but to the detriment of people
looking for a good deal. You can't find a "steal" anymore, anywhere, and
it's because of ebay. Now everybody can see how much a certain item will
bring and price it accordingly.
