Actually I wonder what their radiation pattern looks like and I am thinking
that being right next to them is better than being let;s say 100 yards

You need to be further away than that unless you're at the same
altitude as the antennas. I couldn't get a clear picture at a TV
transmitter site without aiming the antenna at another tower a couple
miles away. You need to study the antenna radio patterns to find out
the expected radiation pattern but you get only micro watts under the
antenna and for some distance from the base of the tower. The signal is
compressed into a horizontal beam to increase the transmit and receive
distance without running higher transmitter power. The smaller
transmitter has less to fail, is cheaper to operate at the expense of
good coverage close to the tower.
