I bought my 735 new in the early 80s for $8xx, so he's asking close to
new price. They currently sell for about $300 to $550, depending on
condition and accessories. Some of the early 735s have plastic trim
caps that cause instability; they need to be replaced with ceramic
caps when the originals go out. Also, the encoder for the main tuning
knob is no longer available from Icom, so when the encoder goes out,
you may or may not be able to find someone who can repair it (I was
lucky, got mine fixed.)

Having said all that, the 735 has an excellent receiver and is a
really good CW rig, in addition to the other modes.

Also, the 735 from the factory has out-of-band coverage for the MARS
frequencies, so the fact that it has been "opened up" doesn't mean a
lot, unless you want to do 60 meters or the CB thing.

If you can get the guy to come down about $2-300, that would be a fair
price.
