Another thought might be to change the original connector to say a 10 pin DIN
... if it isn't that already, and then build the new cable from there.
Adding a DB-9 connector is the common (and simple) solution for this
problem.
Creating another unique solution is not much recommended.
A 5-pin DIN-plug should do the trick as there are not more wires
connected in a serial cable.
It is much more easy to solder and available on every corner.
Just in case the new plug absolutely should fit in the hole.
