Mike, have you confused the RCA mentioned above, with the Stromberg
Carlson AWP-8? That's the only TO knockoff of which I'm aware that
had weather instruments installed. There's one on ebay (Item
number: 2225853356) which just sold for $56.11. (plus $35 shipping).
I'd love to have one of these myself; and this one was not a bad
deal, but finances right now.... :-(
Oh geez, another brain fart! Yes, you're right, I was thinking of my
AMP instead of the RCA. I have both. The RCA is perhaps the best
sounding, but the knobs are rather flimsy, though metal.
Which RCA do you have?
The Stromberg is built like a pickup truck (wait till you pick one
up), and $56 was a steal, especially if it had the weather
instruments still in it.
Did you check the link? All the instruments, but a few problems
otherwise.... The $35 shipping turned me off a bit, but might be worth it
if he's far enough away and takes care with packaging (Although as you
said--'built like a truck;' which means they ship well--my TO knockoffs all
arrived intact with minimal care in shipping.)
Then there's the Philco version, built like a tank, more rugged metal
than the tube TOs. It will anchor at least a small ski boat :-)
Best sound of the bunch.
Do you have a link to the Philco model? I'm not familiar with that one,
although I've researched a bit. I'm aware of the S-C, RCA's (have both
3BX671 and 7BX10, but not the 'alligator' 3BX--one just sold for $595 on
ebay!), Hallicrafters (have the TW-1000), and the Silvertones; but no
Philcos.
Half of these sets (various makes) use bandswitch, half use a TV-like
turret. All fun to play with. --Mike K.
I'm still waiting to get into my Hallicrafters TW-1000. I've got the
manual...waiting for caps. It's got the turret. Looks like fun.
