My feelings exactly.
If I wanted to discuss sat radio, I'd find a sat radio group, either
on usenet, or, perhaps MSN or Yahoo.
I have no interest in any form of radio that requires me to
"subscribe". The beauty of sw is that one can receive it without
having to ask permission first. And one can do this with a minimal of
cost outlay. Counting a piece of wire, one can listen for under
us$50.00 total. No monthly fees, except, perhaps, batteries, but, hey,
there are ways around that too.
And one can hear stuff that may, depending on the country you're in,
be considered "evil". That is part of the fun as well (I love Radio
Habana).
And then, there's the coolness factor of finding something that is not
so well known, and sharing it with others here in the group.
with sat radio, you get a program that tells you what is on, and who
is talking, etc. No coolness there.
Will sw linger a long lonely time, just to die? Probably, but as long
as there are people who believe you can enjoy this hobby with a
minimum of cash outlay, it will survive.
Because, around the world, it's not the people who have the big rigs
that have kept it breathing, it's the people who listen in with a
community radio, or on a cheap portable that have kept it going. In
that world, there is no room for snob factor, only a need for
information. And as long as that world exists, so will sw.
