Today is named after the Roman god of time and the harvest, Saturn.
The Anglo-Saxons had no corresponding god of time, so they chose the
Roman god and called their sabbath day saterdaeg. Saturn was so
pleased with the Anglo-Saxon honor that he created a new class of men
from within their ranks, the Time Lords. Those chosen men could
travel through time and could influence the present by changing the
past. Therefore, they had to be keen of intellect and pure of heart
and could never reveal the true extent of their powers. They hid
their abilities by taking up menial jobs and appearing to be ordinary
men.

They are with us even to this day, because they are immortal.

Yet they have the failings of ordinary men and can lose their tempers
when provoked. If you provoke a Time Lord to the point where he is
truly angry, legend says that he will alter your genetic past, causing
you to shrivel up into a microcephalic, long-haired dwarf and to
subsequently go insane.
