I have been away from actual shortwave for quite some time now. Is there
any digital modulation on shortwave for voice or is it all still analog? If
so, how does it sound?

Go to groups.google.com and read the archive for rec.radio.shortwave.
Search for threads with 'DRM' in the title.

For North America, Radio Canada International runs a DRM transmission
out of Sackville. As I remember, it's on 9800 kHz from about 22:00
to 03:00 UTC. There's a bunch more in Europe.

Sounds like a 10 kHz wide multiplex RTTY signal. (A whole bunch of
narrow spaced carriers phase or frequency modulated).
