New to VHF/UHF
In article ,
says...
I've been on HF for years, but am new to VHF/UHF.
I'm thinking of getting a VHF/UHF base station and it looks like the only
thing around is the ICOM IC-910H. Is there a reason for this? Because of
this, it seems to me that most people must not have a base station for these
bands.
Is this correct?
Very dependent on what mode(s) you want to operate, and how you
define 'base station.'
Examples: If it's just working the local VHF or UHF repeaters from
home, many hams will simply use a mobile radio and 12V power supply.
Others go the route of converting retired commercial gear to amateur
use.
If you're looking for modes other than FM, such as SSB, many of
the modern HF rigs are capable of such operation. My own Icom 706 can
operate all-modes on both 2m and 440 (though it's mounted in my van, so
I can't really call it a 'base station').
Happy hunting.
