Default BC221 as a VFO

I finally got to try using the BC-221 as a vfo on 30 meters, using
a cable with an additional parallel tuned circuit in it to select only
the desired second harmonic. It worked, but the drive voltage was
nowhere near sufficient to drive the rig to full output without adding
another stage of amplification...more of a ball of wax than I want to
get into.
Thanks everyone who responded with suggestions.

Is the driver in the rig designed to work as a frequency multiplier?
I'm not convinced that the output from the VFO has to be free of
harmonics. That's the job of the driver plate (or PA grid) tuning, and
the output pi-net to take care off.
