I think the TNCs are better than the soundcards and software,
at least that's my opinion.
It depends on what you are wanting to do...
My soundcard setup lets me switch from 1.2kb afsk packet to 2.4 or 4.8kb
afsk, or 9.6kb fsk, or even Q15x25 mode for HF, all in a few seconds. If a
new mode comes out this week, I get to try it out - this week. I can also
use the same soundcard interface to do SSTV , RTTY, PSK31, MFSK, etc. and so
on. There is no TNC in a box that can offer that - unless it has a soundcard
packet interface.
On the other hand, soundcard packet is no good to use for for a packet node.
Only a TNC can handle that. Also, you can turn off your computer and a
regular TNC in a box will still accept connections and accept mail. No
soundcard program will do that!
Fact is that both do things the other won't do. Rather than limit myself to
one tool or the other by worrrying which is "best", I just go ahead and use
both of them.
They are both the best!
