You mean the 'combined' FRS/GMRS radios that cover both services but
are still limited to FRS only power levels.

Not much better. At least the GMRS only radios allow you to go 2W of
power.

Although it probably won't be long until there's a radio that does
selectable
power on the GMRS frequencies, and low power only on the FRS only
frequencies.

By the way, I picked up a 'blister card' with 2 GMRS HTs on it at BJs for
$25 after rebate. Granted, that was last year. The 2W units...


I guess my main point was that most emergencies are very local, and just need
a crossband repeater to get out of the hole. Don't buy a 60 to 500 MHz radio,
and don't buy radios that cost $150 a piece. Get a whole bunch of radios that
you can throw away when they break, or get stolen.
