I'm curious about what everyone in this newsgroup considers as their
best shortwave receiver. Mainly I'd like to know if there is a
tendency for using portables vs. so-called desktop receivers. My best
radio is a Sony ICF SW7600GR, and at this time, I only have portable
radios.
The Winradio G313e by far. No other receiver comes close, not even JRC
NRD, not even AR7030.
The only receiver that comes close is Winradio G303e. I bought the
G313e after using the G303e for almost 2 years and never regretted it.
If you have not heard about them, see the latest WRTH review. Here are
the technical detals:

Hope this helps.

I was surprised to see PTWBR rate the 303 slightly higher than the
313. I guess it was primarily value versus price judgement.
Actually, me too. I have both (in fact the 303 encouraged me to buy
the 313, as I was very happy with it), and I believe the extra
features are well worth the price difference. But I can see PTWBR's
point, which is that for an ordinary listener the 313 might be an
overkill - you don't need such a highly accurate S-meter, 0.5ppm
frequency stability, etc. It is really more like an instrument than a
radio. But for myself, I always want the best in radios (I make up for
it by driving a cheap car! :-))
Interestingly, the WRTH gave it 5 stars, both for value for money and
performance.
Did you
opt for the e versions to better accomodate future motherboard designs
or were there other considerations?
Portability. I travel a lot in my work and while at it, I do DXing in
all sorts of strange places.
If you were to make a
reccomendation would it be to save up another 3 bills (or Bens
actually,) and go whole hog, plus the postage? Thanks, S.
It really depends on how keen on radio you are. If you want the best
of the best, get the 313. If you want a really good radio but not
necessarily with all the bells and whistles, get the 303 and it will
also do an excellent job, as PTWBR says in fact.
