Mobile Rig
I did the TS-480HX with Turbo Tuner and Tarheel M-200 screwdriver, and
FT-7800R with glas mount dual band antenna in my Tundra.... it worked out
well. pics here.

The remote faces on these rigs were a great help.... the body of the radios
can be mounted most anywhere.

You could probably get away with bolting a Kenwood TS-440S/AT under the
dash on the passenger side! ;-)
No really - look at the catalog for the compact mobiles with the remote
heads. You could probably fabricate some sort of mount that slips into
those vents above the stereo.
Personally? I drive a Mustang and use a TH-F6 Triband HT that fits in my
shirt pocket.

Looking to install a mobile rig in a 2005 Chevy Malibu with the same
interior/console/dashboard as shown in the attached picture. Any
recommendations for equipment, to include transcievers, amplifiers,
antenna, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to keep the cost to
a minimum.
