I should clarify: I hooked the wire to the bottom of the downspout. You
could easilly use a small alligator clip. Make sure it has electrical
contact with the metal in the pipe, and that the pipe is metal.

I live in an apartment complex and can't put antennas up. So, I hooked a
wire to the downspout and run it under the window - works very well. It's
prolly only 30 ft at the most but it is straight up and down. If there is a
tree not far away, tie a stone to the end of as long a wire as it takes and
chuck it up into the highest part of the tree (or do the same with a
slingshot). Use small diameter wire.
