Both the CB and the PA horn have the usual standard mini jacks on
them.
Trouble is, when I try to use it, all I get is a horrible piercing
feedback whine when I press the mic.
So either the Cobra DXIII doesn't work as a PA system, or I am missing
something simple.
I didn't have the speaker anywhere near the mic, so it's not like it
was picking up feedback through that.
That is exactly what is happening... With the unit set to PA, turn the
volume on the CB all the way down to nothing, and key the mike... Bet
the
squeal is gone... Now turn up the volume to just where is starts to
squeal,
then back it down just a little. That point is as loud as you will be
able
to get the PA...
I should have mentioned in my original post that even with the volume
turned all the way down to the lowest it will go (without shutting the
CB off completely) it still produces the same exact whining noise at
the same ear-piercing decibel level the instant I key the mic.
The volume control doesn't seem to have any effect on it whatsoever.
OK... This is a long shot, but if you have a pair of headphones with the
mini-plug, try plugging that into the PA jack on the radio. Key it and see
if it still squeals. Keep the mike away from the headphones, and don't wear
them! Might go deaf if it does squeal...

Try adjusting with the volume
with the headphones attached...
One other thought... It is the stock mike? Power mikes don't work so well
with PA systems...
