Unfortunately there is no gain knob. I asked a few other places and
some other people thought I might be using a powered mic as well. That
is not the case, as the only place to adjust the volume is right on the
CB itself.

I will try the earphone thing previously mentioned to see if I can
eliminate the speaker as the culprit. A friend also has a higher
quality Cobra CB, I will maybe just try the speaker with his to see if
it has the same effect.

I'd definitely give the speaker a try on this other persons radio,
especially if it has a mike gain knob. This would definitely let you know
one way or the other...
