HD is not allowed at night (with a minor exception in deep winter months),
and there is little reason to test at night something that is totally
legal in daytime hours.
If it's not allowed at night, then why is testing at night underway on
several stations. And furthermore, why in heaven's name would they allow it
at night "in deep winter months"? Winter is the time when MW skywaves work
best, and it would cause the MOST problems, not the least.
The FCC has banned digital radio transmissions, at night, because of
sky-wave propagation problems. So, with that in mind, it will never
become a reality, at night.
Digital radio will never become a reality, anyway, because the vast
majority of the population is not going to spend $200 on digital FM/AM
radios. There are millions of analog AM/FM radios, in existence, that
will have to be backwards-compatible. IF it ever materialized, it will
not affect AM DXing, because the digital portion is only transmitted
with 1/100 of the strength of the analog portion, and with
skywave-propagation problems, will not affect AM DXing.
