If there is going to be a push for HD and a significant investment on
the part of each station, why isn't it being promoted as heavily on those
AM stations using it, as it is on the FMs?

That is a good question. I think that the on air part is just comeing
together now, and many stations may be waiting for receivers to be available
to do the promotion. Most promotion at present is for FM based on the HD 2
channels.
One would think that if DELPHI and JVC can put together a portable
satellite receiver, with decent battery life, they could do the same with
IBOC equipped receivers in a similar sized package.

I don't intimately know the development process. A few months ago, I talked
to Bob Struble (CEO of iBiquity) at a conference for our PDs and Managers
and asked him about a more efficient chipset. I got some discussion of the
power requirements for the DAC and an indication that development, together
with the mostly Chinese manufacturers, was going on. I was not given a
timetable.

Make no mistake, portable satellite receivers get good and warm,
indicating some serious current draw, not unlike the first and second
generations of digital cameras, but they do work, and battery life is
pretty solid.

Right now, a receiver with 4 AA batteries would only last about 4 to 6
hours.

I get not quite twice that with a rechargeable Li Ion battery on my
Delphi. Clearly, alkalines won't be quite the way to go, yet.
