I feel the same way about Chuck Harder as well.
I just heard Chuck Harder died ... can you verify this?
I know he's been brain dead a long time, but other than that I haven't
heard he got planted yet.
SC
Truthfully, despite what I heard the other day (no, I did not imagine
it), I honestly don't know what Chuck Harder's situation is.
Like I've said for years, Chuck should have retired long ago. His
political constituency (I call it the Timothy McVeigh crowd) is long
gone.
The only reason Chuck is still on the radio is because he is still on
the radio. I realize that sounds a bit recursive - an example of
"circular reasoning" - but it's the only explanation I can come up
with. I guess radio talk show hosts are like civil service folks (or
Supreme Court members): they're in it for life, and it's awfully hard -
or impossible - to fire them.
Late last week, to find out more about what happened to Chuck, I tuned
in to his radio network (TalkStar) early in the morning and kept it on
until Chuck's program cranked up. There was no mention of Chuck during
the earlier shows - absolutely nothing. It was as if "For The People"
never existed. That contrasts with Chuck's earlier networks, where the
hosts of the other programs - both before and after "For The People" -
would mention the show on a fairly regular basis. Not to mention all
the ads for "For The People," most of which were narrated by Chuck
himself.
Not this time.
The spookiest aspect of Chuck is the fact that he doesn't take callers
anymore, and hasn't done so for over a year.
Why?
Finally, there's that cute gal with the light Southern accent urging
Chuck's listeners to "e-mail two friends" to tune in, so that Chuck can
"double" his audience and rescue the U.S. of A. because "now, more than
ever, America needs Chuck Harder." Sadly, those PSA's are starting to
get on my nerves.
Funny you put it that way because that's the way I remember it too. The
last time I listened was maybe ten years ago. He kept talking the McVeigh
& nickols story and played that stupid steam boat Swaney River over &
over. And power beams from space trying to talk control of him or some
such thing.
