Default Shakespeare HF/SSB Marine Antennas

Has anyone experimented with these 2-30 MHz antennas in the ham bands?
They are typically rated as 2-30 MHz with a resonant freq around 8 or 10
MHz - Models 390, 393, 5300, 222, 229-F, 5390, 5310R, etc. They are
intended to be used with an Antenna Tuner, but I'm wondering if it must
be located at (or near) the base of the vertical whip, or if there can
be a coax or single wire feeder of some length.

They are not cheap, compared to the typical trap verticals, but thought
they might be interesting for an experiment in portable, or emergency
type communications.
