ZL8, KERMADEC ISLANDS. A ZL8R press release was sent out on October 20th.
OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive the complete press release as an
additional bulletin. In short, the press release states that the Microlite
Penguins Dxpedition to Raoul Island in the Kermadecs went QRT at 2200 UTC
on October 17th with over 40,000 QSOs in the log. Operators were EI6FR,
HB9ASZ, K9ZO, N0TT, N6MZ, VK6DXI, W7EW and 9V1YC. Total on-air operating
time was just over 7 days. Landing on Raoul Island involves a rather
dangerous jump from a zodiac onto a rock face, but thankfully the seas
were cooperative and none of the team slipped or was injured in the
process. Transceivers consisted of six, brand new Icom IC-7000's kindly
sponsored by Icom America, and antennas were all simple wire dipoles strung
up in the surrounding pine trees. Given the weak worldwide propagation at
this point in the solar cycle, they still made every effort to work as many
European stations as possible. The final ZL8R QSO statistics a North
America 39%, South America 1%, Europe 26%, Asia 30%, Africa 1% and Oceania
3%. Most of the QSOs were on 40m (15%), 30m (13%), 20m (22%), 17m (13%)
and 15m (20%). PLEASE NOTE! Almost all of the expenses for this trip were
paid by the team members themselves. But given the extraordinary expense
it takes to charter a ship to a remote island in the Pacific for two weeks,
they hope that each and every DXer will help contribute to this endeavor,
either by donations with your QSL cards to their QSL Manager VE3XN, or
by joining the NCDXF - the Northern California DX Foundation.

ZS9, SOUTH AFRICA. Members of the Bloemfontein Defence Amateur Radio Club
will use the callsign ZS9X during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 28-29th)
as a Multi-Operator entry. Operators will be John/ZS4S, Barney/ZS4U,
Bernie/ZS4TX, Jan/ZS4JAN, Edwin/ZS5BBO and Dennis/ZS4BS, members of the
full-time and Reserve Force of the SANDF. The ZS9X station is situated
approximately 20 km west of Bloemfontein on a hill overlooking a military
training area. The station has an impressive antenna system comprising
of three Log Periodic antennas covering 3 - 30 MHz fixed in northwest,
a north and a northeast directions to be used mainly on 80-40 meters.
Each Log Periodic has 30 elements and occupies about an acre of ground.
They will use a rotatable Optibeam OB17/4, at a height of 20m (approx
60 ft), covering 40-10 meters; one 5 element 10 meter monobander up at
a height of 30m (approx 100 ft) fixed north; and one 5 element 15 meter
monobander up at a height of 20m (approx 60 ft) fixed north. In addition,
there will be one HF Discone antenna mounted on a 40m mast covering
1.5 - 30 MHz, which will be used mainly on 160 meters and two shunt
loaded towers for use on 80 and 160 meters. The equipment is a mixture
of Yaesu and Icom transceivers with valve type amplifiers. QSL information
is available on QRZ.com. Pictures, a web site and more information will
be added as the station progresses.
