Sounds like a manufacturing defect - or they got tweaked somehow ...
Good luck - if you try to bend them to fit, you really should check for
cracks - including all of the bracing and connecting welds.

The two pieces I have are not concentric and each
tapered part slants toward the middle at about 3
degrees rather than pointing straight out. The
slant is enough to cause the pieces not to fit
together.
