Default Rotor mast through the roof.

I have a small rotator and a short mast fastened to a vent pipe in the back
of the house for a UHF TV antenna. Something like that might work, if the
antennas are not too big. I suspect the overall long term cost will be less.

Yes. I think the notion of putting the mast through a hole in the roof
dates to the time of "armstrong rotators" ie you'd rotate by hand, and
thus need the access to the mast.

You want some height above the roof so it doesn't affect the antenna, and
surely that amounts to enough for a small mast section and the rotor. Or
as you suggest, mount it on something outside that is below the roof, and
then have a mast to get it up high enough.

ONe winter, I had a two metre beam on a one section of mast, tied (I
can't remember with what) to the balcony (using the railing and a support
to the roof of the balcony) in the back. That was difficult to rotate by
hand, but it was doable.

When it went on the roof the next summer, again just enough mast was used
to raise it so the roof didn't interfere with the antenna's pattern, and
there was ample room to fit in a rotor.
