Default Fredrick 1280R FSK modem, any opinions?

Hi,

As I am currently looking for a dedicated RTTY modem (as opposed to a
soundcard-based setup), I found WO5P's (http://www.wo5p.net/) 'offer of
the week'-deal quite acceptable.

'Acceptable' as in 'The price he's asking for one of these units is
within my price range' - I don't know anything about this particular
model's virtues or vices - which is where r.r.a.e. comes in handy!

When googling the model#, most hits refer back to the abovementioned web
shop. It is claimed that it is 'similar' to the HAL ST8000 - anyone know
just *how* similar? I know a couple of hams using ST8000s - they're
quite happy with their choice. If the 1280 is nearly identical, chances
are I, too, will be most satisfied with my purchase.

Also, assuming that a commercial unit is not optimised for 45.45Bd
operation @ 170Hz shift - anyone know how simple it is (or is not! to
modify the unit for such operation? Can the detector filters be tweaked
enough for it to be worthwhile, or should I rather look for a dedicated
ham unit?

Any input appreciated.
