China is emerging as the world’s next great economic superpower, but what
does that country’s recent acceptance of capitalism mean for the future of
its political structure? Some political scientists are optimistic that China
’s free markets will eventually lead to a free society, while some experts
remain skeptical that Communist leaders will ever relinquish control.
Tonight we will be discussing the political future of China with DALI YANG,
professor of political science at the University of Chicago, and JAMES MANN,
former Beijing bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times and author of the new
book THE CHINA FANTASY: How Our Leaders Explain Away Chinese Repression.
