The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. It doesn't matter
*who* said it, because it's true.

But it's not a need at all... as AM radio serves everyone quite well at
the
present time without HD/IBOC.

Yes, it serves it's aging and declining audience quite well. If it wants
to survive another 70 years, then it *may* have to change.

IAC, I'm not talking about AM HD. AM HD seems like a waste of time, like
"AM stereo" was 20 years ago. I'm talking about FM HD. FM was originally
designed for high fidelity. Then we got stereo, a big improvement. Now
it's time to go digital, another big improvement, with the added side
benefit of more channels in the same bandwidth.

I'd characterize it more as a 'want' on the part of the few, rather than a
'need' of the many.

Don't discount "wants". The "wants' of the many also outweigh the "wants"
of the few. If more people want HD AM than want analog AM then guess who
wins? If not, then things will stay the same. That's the thing about
"majority rules".
