I've worked in repair shops too, and noticed people's descriptions of
something being "dead" often leave a lot to be desired.

"My TV is dead."
"Oh, is the picture completely black?"
"Uh, no."
"Well what does it look like?"
"It's all fuzzy."
"You mean blurry?"
"Uh, no. It's like sand."
"You mean snowy?"
"Uh, yeah. I guess."
"And is there no sound at all?"
"No. It's fuzzy too."
"You mean people are hard to understand?"
"No. It's like the picture."
"Oh, you mean just a hissing static sound?"
"Yeah. Like I said, it's dead."
"Do you have an antenna or cable system hooked to the TV?"
"What's that?"............
