yeah, thought about the gearpuller. i can't really see what's holding
it on, but it does seem to be a problem w.the shaft. a guess is it
has been cut up by one of the screws perhaps leaving a ridge or
something stopping assembly from sliding off.

the assembly moves just fine and isn't frozen -- just won't move all
the way off, or even very far outboard.
