Default D-STAR a must have ?

After a 20 year hiatus from activity, I'm getting the shack going again. I
dusted off the old Icom 22S and discovered no one could hear me because the
rig doesn't have sub-audible tones. Even the old simplex watering holes
are using tone squelch.

Is D-STAR going to be the next 'tone squelch'? Should I get a D-STAR rig to
stay ahead of obsolescence, or would it be a waste of money?
