I think the HQ-170 is an HQ-110 plus the HC-10 tunable if. The HQ-180 came
out later and I suspect had overall improvements and may have been designed
more from the ground up.

The HQ-170 plays like a $200 radio with a great tunable if. The HQ-180
plays like a $400 radio.

But, these are just my opinion - totally subjective. Hope I do not hurt any
HQ-170 fans' feelings.

Well I have had my HQ-170 for a while now. I restored one that I
bought on Ebay for about $200 including shipping. A local ham had a
parts HQ-170A unit that I purchased from him. The HQ-170A has a flip
top cabinet that allows you to access the tubes and everything on top
of the chassis. I believe the HQ-170A has a solid state replacement
for the 5U4GB power supply rectifier tube. There are some other
differences in some of the connections on the rear panel. Seems like
you can pickup a HQ-170 for a decent price. The HQ-170A VHF models
command a pretty high price. The HQ-180's seem to be worth their
weight in gold as Bill noted in his message, I also saw the one on
Ebay go for $1700+ recently. The only recommendation I would have is
to expect to have to do a complete alignment to the receiver and
replace C82, the 4 section electrolytic. This alignment can be kinda
tricky and you will need to have an accurate 60 KHz signal generator
to get the 60 KHz IF's aligned correctly. I am real happy with my
HQ-170. I use it mainly on AM on 75 meters with my Johnson Ranger
transmitter. 73 de Randy, WB5KCM
