You're right about that Cartier dude. Sailed over here in 1535 and
explored what would end up being called the St. Lawrence River. Some
Iroquois indian pointed upriver to where his village was and used the
Huron-Iroquois word for village,"Kanata". The name sort of stuck,
except for the spelling.
