After the Boxing Day tsunami, the morning show on a rap-oriented
(Emmis-owned) station in NYC, WQHT, had this song to the tune of "We
are the World" which included the word "chink" and the wonderful line
"You could hear God laughing 'Swim you bitches, swim'".
Emmis was shocked, shocked that their bad boys and girls in the
morning zoo were ... being bad boys and girls.
(CBS executive played by Claude Rains "Where's that big check for
those ads that cost a lot more than we could charge for the ads if we
didn't have Imus shooting off his mouth and getting big ratings?")
Imus was given something of a "license" by some of the more misogynist
rappers for whom every woman is a "ho".
That brings up the case of Sarah Jones, a black playwright and
actress, and KBOO, a tiny non-commercial station in Portland, OR.
Jones got sick of the "motherf*cking this" and "ho that" and wrote
"Your Revolution" (will not happen between these thighs...)
The FCC fined KBOO for playing "Your Revolution". The fine would have
been nothing for Clear Channel or Citadel but it could have killed
KBOO. The courts threw out the fines and I believe some celebrities
paid the legal fees and probably filled their pledge coffers to the
level of a year or two.
To paraphrase Mencken, no one ever went broke underestimating the
intelligence of the listeners of the morning zoos.
