Default 2m All Mode Rig

Charlie...If what you are looking for is a single band rig for 2, all you
have to decide is if you want it recent enough for computer control, or not,
and how much power you want to run.
You can get in for 300 bucks or so with old Kenwoods (TS700 series) or Icom
(IC251) or Yaesu (FT221)...If you move up to something like a more recent
IC275H, it will run you about double that amount...You get more power,
computer control, PL on FM...stuff like that. Some of the other rigs
mentioned like the Yaesu 726 and 736 are not 2 meter only rigs.
Another favorite of mine was the Yaesu FT225RD...problem with some of these
rigs is that they are now aproaching, or past 20 years old....you may well
end up with someone's problem rig. A really great multimode rig that is new
enough to have a tone board (option) and has a real hot receiver....and not
too expensive is the Kenwood TR751A. Although it is a smaller 12 volt
mobile rig....it has feet for desktop use...so would work out great!

I looking to buy a used all mode base rig for two metres at the end
of year and am leaning towards an Icom IC820H. I have looked at the
comments on eHam and it looks as if this rig is a favourite. I
wonder if anyone has/had one and if they have any comments to make
on the rig.

TIA,

Charlie.

PS:I realise that a real radio amateur would buy a tin of biscuits,
eat the biscuits and then build his own rig in the tin from a bag of
components bought at his club's junk sale but I don't eat biscuits.
