Those have a narrow viewing angle, which would be ok if they were used for
indicator lamp assemblies. You want a wide viewing angle for backlighting
meters and dials.
After trying LEDs, and finding the light was too focused, I wound-up just
using grain-of-wheat lamps (from the local model supply emporium) when
relamping my new-to-me TS-130S. Then, a friend (service manager for a sound
equipment company) said, "Just file/grind off the lens on the LED... the
light will be a bit dimmer but spread over a wider area." I intend to do
that the next time around.
If using incandescent lamps, you can also use a current source or varistor
to limit the inrush current, and extend the life somewhat.
