Default RDFing with a DX398/AT909

Yesterday we had lunch with some non radio friends. Their daughters, a
smart set of 16 year twins taking
all sorts of AP courses in school volunteered to check my methodology
of using a DX398 as a RDF unit.

They both have had AP Physics so have some understanding of EM waves.
I demonstrated how to null a
known local station and after lunch the were off. I had to work
yesterday afternoon. I sicked them on the
Winchester 1610 TIS with no hints. They were on telephone with my wife
when I got home all excited. They
live in Paris KY which is about 20 miles north west of Winchester.
After some false starts they got the hang
of it and found the station in about 45 minutes.

The 1640 signals are just too weak, I am going to the the grid search
as suggested and when it is strong
enough then do some RDFing.

I have a McKayDymek DA5 that I have loaned to a neighbor and it
doesn't have enough gain to receive
anything on 1640.

I am starting to get irritated now.
