Why is the Eavesdropper minus the static arrestor?
Because I'm keeping it?

If that's the Zap Trapper that came with the antenna, be advised it
has a finite halflife. It loses effectiveness over time.
If I understand correctly, these use a gas filled tube, and remain effective until
they directly short to ground, much the same as the Alpha Delta Transitrap.

I've had the Alpha Delta versions in line here for many years and they've not yet
failed.

They are a sealed gas tube. However, impurities, leakage...that sort
of thing, compromise effectiveness over time. And even a few static
strikes will produce some electrolytic action between the electrodes and
the gas introducing further impurities. I read an article a some years
ago, either on the Universal or the Grove websites, recommending
replacement of the gas cartridge every few years as a matter of course.

The Transitrap has a replaceable cartridge, in part, for this reason.

Now you did it! You made me go dig out the paperwork!

From the Alpha Delta data sheet: ...Arc-Plug Cartridge replacement is indicated by an
increase in VSWR during transmitter tune-up, or by a "dead" receiver caused by the
Arc-Plug Cartridge being shorted due to an extremely strong near-miss lightning
dischharge.

Then that settles that. Thanks.

Looks as though Universal is offering up a new Hy-Power AB-SWL-SL

sloper antenna:

Are you going to try it Steve? Looks like it might be allright?
I rather doubt I'll be trying it, Brian. Tentative plans here are to try
and put
up an inverted vee this coming summer for 60 meters, and then use that for
other
bands as well with an antenna tuner. Not even sure anymore if it would
even be
worthwhile to try it, but I might have a go with it.

I do have a used Eavesdropper C for sale, minus the static arrestor, for
$25.00
+ shipping, in case anyone might be interested.
