"HD Radio"
Until now, portable HD Radio receivers have been unavailable because
the chipsets needed by this technology required too much power to be
practical for a battery-operated device. However, in January 2008 at
the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas iBiquity unveiled a
prototype of a new iPod-sized portable receiver. It is based on a new
chipset developed by Samsung. Although portable, it is still a
relatively power-hungry device (it will run on an average set of
alkaline batteries in about two hours, according to an iBiquity
engineer). But Samsung engineers at CES say a second-generation
chipset due in 2009 will be about 40 percent more power efficient and
then a third-generation chipset due about a year later will use even
less energy. According to iBiquity, Sony and others have expressed an
interest in using the first-generation chipset and that the first
portable HD Radios could be on the retail market in the USA as early
as Christmas 2008."

Let me get this straight, Eduardo - the current "new" Samsung chipset
has a battery life of only 2 hours, and the next-gen chip, due out in
2009, will be 40% more efficient - that leaves about 3 hours of
battery life. DAB radios in the UK (DAB now defunct) have a bettery
life of 10 to 16 hours. Let's see - my little Sony ICF-S10MK2 analog
pocket-radio, will probably go 200+ hours on two "AA" batteries. Lots-
of-luck!
IBOCcrock,
In reality the 'portable' HD-Radio will be part of the Third Wave
of HD-Radio deployment and adoption.
The First Wave - Presently there are first and second
generation HD-Radios for the Home; and these Home
HD-Radios do not have Power as an identifiable issue :
Because they run-off of the House's AC Power {Mains}
as their Source of Energy.
The Really All Important "The Second Wave" will be the
BIG ADVANCEMENT toward the Earily Adoption of
HD-Radio : Will come in the placement of HD-Radios
in Cars and Trucks. Again like in the Home the Power
Source is not and identifiable issue with HD-Radio in
the Automobile; since the HD-Radio runs-off the Car's
self-charging 12 Volt DC Systems.
NOTE - A Rental Car with and HD-Radio in it Exposes 50
or more Radio Listeners to HD-Radio each year. Allow
them to Experience HD-Radio for themselves.
IMHO - The History of HD-Radio will follow the path of
FM Radio becoming 'intergrated' over time into the now
"Ubiquitous" AM/FM Radio.
Sometime In-the-Future and That-Time-Will-Come !
When the FCC Issues Rules and Regulations that
Mandates that All New Radios will be fully Digital
"All Mode" AM/FM/DS Radios
-aka- All Digital IBOC "HD" AM/FM Radio with Direct
Satellite (DS) Plug-and-Play.
Once that FCC Requirement happens Digital Radio
Broadcasting will be "The Standard" in the USA within
Five Years after it's implementation.
Hello Everyone - You don't have to Like -or- Dislike {Hate}

"Is HD Radio Toast?"
"There are serious issues of coverage. Early adopters who bought HD
radios report serious drop-outs, poor coverage, and interference. The
engineers of Ibiquity may argue otherwise and defend the system, but
the industry has a serious
PR problem with the very people we need to
get the word out on HD... In other words, everything you can find on
the regular FM dial... The word has already gotten out about HD Radio.
People who have already bought an HD Radio are telling others of their
experience (mostly bad) and no amount of marketing will reverse this."

Kook - HD Radio doesn't even work.
