Default MC1350 - Low noise replacement?

Hello,

I'm looking for an IF amp (w/agc and 50db max gain is ample) to use as a
replacement for an MC1350. Main reason is noise reduction. Doesn't
necessarily need be in 8-pin dip package, however, not enough room for an
entirely built-up amp.

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Emil

You didn't mention what IF frequency...

I believe you'll find some nice VGAs (variable gain amplifiers) at
Analog Devices and probably at Linear Technology. TI is another good
bet. Some are digitally controlled, but I'm pretty sure I've seen
analog-controlled ones too. I've personally been using Linear
Technology's LTC6400-20. It's a fixed 20dB gain part with reasonably
good noise figure and low distortion, useful to a couple hundred MHz.
It's a tad power-hungry (the price you pay for low distortion) and in
a package you may find hard to deal with. But it's been one of the
easiest op amp based amplifiers in this class I've found to keep
stable.

Cheers,
Tom
