All,

I'm seeing posts like the following every couple days on “Six Club.”

“A few minutes ago, worked KG4HOT/mobile in FM07 while I was mobile in
EM57. He was a solid 5-9. FYI, my set up a yeasu FT-857d, 100 watts,
into a whip antenna. Band was crowded with 1's, 2's 3's, and 4's.

“N9LAG Rob
“Grid EM-57”

Any idea why we're seeing sporadic-E activity so early in the cycle?

Es is not all that well understood, but current thinking is that it is
not tied in to the solar cycle in the way you intimate. Es peaks in
summer and winter, the summer peak being better. You are experiencing the
early days of your summer peak, just as downunder we are seeing the early
days of the winter peak.

Look at some Ionograms for signs of Es, and treat what you hear about it
with suspicion (yes, including this). I heard a theory propounded by a
net controller to his flock on 40m a couple of days ago that HF sporadic
E goes down when VHF sporadic E goes up. How is that?
