August 16-17 is our Remembrance Day Contest, where we honour all who
have or are serving in our Military Forces and remember those who paid
the Supreme Sacrifice in World War Two.
The weekend this years lies smack between 2 Major milestones.
Friday 15 August is the 63rd anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day,
then Monday 18 August is the 42nd anniversary of Vietnam Veterans' Day
and the Battle of Long Tan
This years RD Contest Manager Peter VK4OD will again be with us this
week but on such a matter as remembering our Military Heroes, when in
Canberra might I suggest you take an iTour of the War Museum?
iTour is a guide to the Commemorative Area, the heart of the Australian
War Memorial in Canberra. Using a world first technology touch-screen
hand held device, the iTour allows visitors to understand and
appreciate this important area.
The iTour features interpretation of the Hall of Memory, the Four

Record year for VK lighthouses
At last count there was a record 41 Australian lighthouse registrations
for the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend on the 16th and
17th of August.
Worldwide there's 300 with the man taking the registrations Kevin
Mulcahy VK2CE predicting a traditional late rush will possibly see a

Australia's CSIRO is developing new wireless technologies for locating,
tracking, sensing and communicating in areas where global positioning
systems (GPS) do not work....
Trevor Taege VK4BAT has the details..........
The new high-accuracy terrestrial localisation systems are suitable for
applications as diverse as tracking workers in emergency situations to
following cyclists racing around a track.
CSIRO has signed a $1 million collaboration to develop the technology
for emergency purposes in conjunction with Emergency Management
Australia (EMA), Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety
Agency and the National Security Science and Technology Branch within
the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Federal Attorney-General, Mr Robert McClelland, who is the Minister
responsible for EMA, says the technology could prove "an invaluable
tool for Australian emergency service workers, especially when
searching for injured or lost people in hazardous situations.
The system use radio frequency tracking technologies and consists of a
network of wireless nodes which can be combined with sensors to enable
monitoring of environmental variables.
The System could see emergency personnel sent into dangerous situations
wearing sensors which monitor their heart rate and core temperature, as
well as gas or radiation levels in the surrounding environment.
Trevor Taege VK4BAT for VK1WIA News......
Michael Owen, VK3KI, President of the Wireless Institute of Australia.
"A couple of weeks ago I told you that the WIA and the ACMA had signed
the agreement that would allow the ballot for two letter callsigns to
go ahead and that the information would be placed on the WIA website on
1 August, that is last Friday. The ballot is being conducted by the WIA
on behalf of the ACMA, and in accordance with certain principles set by
ACMA that the WIA is required to observe.
In fact, the paper setting out in full the ballot process that will be
used, a list of the available two letter calls and a downloadable
application form was placed on the WIA website on 1 August as promised.
The ballot process paper will also be published in the August issue of
the WIA's magazine, "Amateur Radio".
If you are eligible to participate in the ballot, that is you hold or
are qualified to hold, an advanced licence, you reside permanently in
Australia and you do not already hold a two letter callsign, and wish
to participate, then you must complete and lodge the application form
and it must be received at the WIA office no later than Friday 29
August.
If you cannot download the application form from the website, you can
ask for form to be sent to you by mail to the WIA national office, or
by telephone between 10 am and 4 pm on week days to 03 9528 5962, or by
email to or by facsimile to 03 95238191.
An application to participate must be accompanied by the non refundable
fee of $59.74 and must be either hand delivered or received through the
mail by Friday 29 August. It cannot be sent electronically or by
facsimile.
So, if you know anyone who is interested and who may not be hearing
this broadcast, please let him or her know where to find for the
information on how to participate.
How the ballot will be conducted is fully described in the ballot
process paper. However, I stress that it doesn't matter whether you are
a WIA member or not, there is no preference in the ballot given to WIA
members.
Everyone who participates in the ballot will be advised the result by
letter posted by no later than 24 September.
We will be broadcasting this reminder at least 3 times during August.
Thank you.

church A Low-Power FM 88 MHz licence in Gawler sold at an ACMA auction
for a record-breaking price of $7,600 last month. The winning bid was
placed by Perth-based media consultant Philip Smith, who specialises in
Open Narrowcast licences.
The previous record price at an ACMA auction for an LPON was $7,500 set
by Racing Radio in 2006 for an LPON in Launceston, Tasmania.
The Seventh-day Adventist church backed Smith for the acquisition of
this licence, raising more than enough money to cover the final bid
price and now has almost 100 Low Power Open Narrowcast FM licences
across Australia.
Philip Smith speaking with radioinfo.com.au said "These auction results
are a good indicator of the true market value of an LPON FM licence in

WEIRD N WONDERFUL Descending Space Junk
Almost exactly one year ago, on July 23, 2007, International Space
Station astronauts threw an obsolete, refrigerator-sized ammonia
reservoir overboard. The 1400-lb piece of space junk has been circling
Earth ever since and now, in July 2008, its orbit has decayed so much
that it has become an easy naked-eye target for backyard sky watchers.
The "Early Ammonia Servicer" (EAS for short) is almost as bright as the
stars of the Big Dipper and growing brighter as it descends. The July
23rd edition of spaceweather.com displays photos of the EAS, which is
expected to burn up in Earth's atmosphere in late 2008 or early 2009.

Only 13 days to the 2008 RD contest.
In last weeks news I mentioned that this week I would explain the
scoring structure, here goes, as per last years contest it was very
evident that a lot of clubs participated using multiple operators
across all of the bands and various modes.
In order to simplify the recording of all the logs I have broken up the
HF and VHF into sub-sections the chart showing the layout is on the WIA
website at the very bottom of the rules for this contest is a coloured
chart showing the A,B,C,& D. layout, and just how I have broken the
sections down, mainly into Single and Multi op's.
I would strongly recommend that ALL participants download the rules and
read them.
This year we have a special surprise for the opening address which is a
very first for the WIA, and Amateur Radio. Only ONE person has taken up
the offer for a reply to their RD Contest confirmation email.
The Amateurs who intend on using Electronic logging software, PLEASE
PLEASE check your version as many of the programs have revisions over
the last 12 months, log on and download the latest version.
This year the International Lighthouse event is on the same weekend as
the RD Contest, I would like to suggest that all and any operators take
time out to work in both events exchanging points and details.
If any of the Radio Clubs or Individual stations, have any of the NEW
licensed Foundation members in your area please utilizes this weekend
to increase their on air operating skills, this could also foster their
interest in participating in other contest's, this applies to the Rd
and Lighthouse event.

available.

RFID TAGS VS. HOSPITAL ELECTRONICS
Medical monitoring equipment in hospitals could be interfered with by
micro-power tracking devices called R-F Identification Tags. This,
according to scientists in the Netherlands.
Radio frequency identification devices better known as RFID tags are on
the rise in healthcare. Among other things they are being used to help
track patients and reveal the location of equipment.
In some recent tests, RFID's either switched off or changed the
settings on mechanical ventilators, completely stopped the working of
syringe pumps, caused external pacemakers to malfunction, and halted
dialysis machines. You can read the full story at

RADIO IN SPACE: SATELLITE INTERFERENCE GROWING
The problem of interference to the satellite signals of broadcasters
and other space relay communications is getting worse. So says a high
ranking executive of the satellite transmission company Intelsat.
According to a report carried by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union,
Intelsat's Vice President of network operations recently made the
comments during a meeting of the World Broadcasting Unions
International Satellite Operations Group in Atlanta. The account of
Chaudhry's remark also quotes him as saying that while most
interference is not intentional, a small amount is deliberate, some of
it is possibly politically motivated.

The Final Final
REWIND - A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY (Will McGhie VK6UU is WIA National
Historian) HIRAM PERCY MAXIM'S TELEGRAPH KEY RETURNS TO ARRL HQ
The telegraph key that once belonged to the "Father of Ham Radio",
Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW, has been returned to ARRL Headquarters. The
key had been in the collection of the Antique Wireless Association's
Electronic Communication Museum near Rochester, New York for more than
20 years. AWA decided to return Maxim's key to the organization he
co-founded almost 100 years ago. The key will find a prominent place in
the League's collection of historical artefacts, the Old Man's key has
come home. (sourced to arrl letter)
