OT Chinese 'QUALITY'
In article TvLtk.10378$nu6.5392@edtnps83,
says...
This would be funny if I didn't own one of their diesel generators.
Note how they spell 'Quality'. It say it all.

None of the PDF files download properly.
Then I find out they've recalled my generator because of possible
counterfeit CSA certification of electrical components. When am I going
to LEARN?
======================================
TORONTO, ON โค=3F September 26, 2007 โค=3F CSA International, in cooperation
with Fuzhou Launtop M&E Co. Ltd. and Better Source Asia, of Fuzhou City,
China announces a voluntary recall of approximately 30,000 gasoline-and
diesel-powered generators. The affected models were produced with
uncertified circuit protectors, circuit breakers, receptacles and wiring
and do not meet the applicable standards. The uncertified components and
wiring may pose a shock and/or fire hazard. In addition, some generators
may have circuit breakers bearing counterfeit (unauthorized use)
registered trademarks belonging to CSA International.
No incidents or injuries have been reported related to the affected
generators.
This recall affects all gasoline models rated for 950 W, 1200 W, 2500 W,
3000 W, 3800 W, 5000 W, and 6500 W and diesel models rated for 2200 W,
3600 W, 5000 W, 5500 W and 6000 W. The affected models may bear a CSA
mark with or without file numbers 223771 or 233220.
These generators were sold in Canada and the United States under the
brand names Alternative Power Source, Aurora, CM, Elim International,
Ener G, Genertek, Launtop, Portland, Power on the Go, Red Maple. The
units were sold by retail, equipment auction houses and internet outlets
for between $160.00 to $2,300.00 CDN

I have seen some amazingly badly made electronics from China over the
years. I thought nothing would outcrap some of the Hong Kong stuff from
40-45 years ago, but that stuff is great compared to a lot of China made
stuff. Not that it's all bad, a lot of computer stuff is made very well.
I saw a PC power supply, supposedly 600 watt, that was downright scary
inside. It looked great on the outside, it had a neat looking case, and
lit up with nice green LEDS. Inside, there were parts with long
untrimmed leads, no sleeves on them, junk caps in it, and poor
soldering, like I did at age 7, maybe worse. A friend bought it at a
computer show, and it exploded about a week after it was put into a
machine. I'm pretty positive any CSA/UL stickers it had were phony too.
He paid $65 for it, a price that would have bought him a much better
power supply from newegg.com or tigerdriect.com, among others.
My all time favorite was the impressive looking radio I bought at a
garage sale in the early 70's. It said "15 Transistor" on the front of
it, and was BIG. Funny though, it didn't play very loudly, and was
pretty deaf on FM. I wondered if maybe the antenna wasn't connected, or
something else was wrong with it. There was something wrong, 9 of the 15
transistors had the leads soldered together, into a single hole in the
PC board. Even the board was pitiful, the traces looked like the first
boards I made myself, with one of those resist pens, drawn freehand.
When it died, we took it out and shot it with a .357 magnum, and it blew
up real good.
