Digital Radio Will Level Field For AM, Martin Says
By Jeffrey Yorke

AUSTIN -- FCC chairman Kevin Martin (pictured) says the radio industry's
migration to digital delivery from analog will "level the playing field" for
AM stations that are suffering from poor audio quality and, thus, lack of
listener support.

Martin, speaking during the NAB Radio Show's annual "Chairman's Breakfast"
Thursday (Sept. 18), acknowledged the importance of the FCC facilitating the
industry's conversion to digital but also said that he thinks radio
receivers ought to be capable of receiving an array of signals including
AM/FM, HD Radio and satellite radio signals.

Martin, Boy Wonder, is out of touch! And will saying anything for a
buck or trip.
Radio is dying with its older listeners. This same generation grew up
with AM/FM and has little interest in upgrading.

The next generation feels “Listening to radio is like listening to
your friend’s ipod with commercials” They’ve checked out and become
addicted to the Internet and mobile access while radio let them get
away. They don’t even know what AM radio is, and Iboc isn’t going to
bring them back.
It’s not a sound problem, it’s how technology enables it’s users to
cho0se content, when they want and what they want to see or hear.

He noted that the Commission has just released a public inquiry seeking
positions on whether such a rule ought to be mandated by the government, but
it was clear what his position is.
