We would like to be able to do computer analysis of the HP-8558B data. Has
someone built an interface to get the data into a PC and is there some
software that would do the analysis? I guess that we could resort to digital
photography of the screen and then scan the picture into the computer? We
would still need some software to do the analysis.

Have any of you done something like this?

I've gotten data out of a spectrum analyzer of this sort by hooking a
digital oscilloscope (one with data-capture capability) to the
auxiliary X-axis and Y-axis display outputs on the analyzer back
panel. By triggering on the first part of the rising edge of the
X-axis sweep, capturing both axis signals simultaneously, and then
uploading the data from the 'scope to a PC, it's then possible to
reconstruct the trace on the screen from the resulting data pairs and
then do analysis.

A two-channel ADC (perhaps USB-based?) could be used in the same way.
