Shooting oneself in the foot...
I've had a couple of days off, and had some time yesterday to get on the
air. 20 was open to Europe, so I ran off a few CW QSOs & then decided to
give RTTY a shot.
Called CQ. Three stations came back. Looked like one of them might have
been PH0AW, but I wasn't certain of the call as it was among the jumble
of the other callers.
So I came back: PH0AW? PH0AW? AGN PSE K
And PH0AW did respond. So did another station whose call contained the
letters C, D, G, L, X, and the number 9. Note that *none* of these
letters appear in the call PH0AW.
Turns out EVERY TIME I STOPPED TRANSMITTING, this C-D-G-L-X-9 station
called me. EVERY TIME. Needless to say, this made it difficult to print
PH0AW. I did however eventually complete the QSO with the Dutch
station. After signing off, two stations called: the C-D-G-L-X-9 station
and DJ9MH. As you might guess, I ignored the "I think every call means
me" station and worked DJ9MH.
Signed off with DJ9MH, and there was only one caller, the C-D-G-L-X-9
station.
I QSYd to PSK31.
Hint: if you want to work W9WI, you might *not* want to call every time I
stop transmitting. Especially if your callsign has absolutely no
characters in common with the guy I came back to.
I do not mean to pick on RTTY operators in general. Often CW and phone
operators are every bit as bad at this.
