Default Back into digital

I have been off the digital modes since about 2003. Now I would like
to get back on. Which way to go? I work RTTY and PSK but others are
interesting. My rig is an IC756ProII w/ lousy antenna.

Question, hardware or software setup or combination. I prefer a
software interface I think.

Assuming you have a reasonably fast computer, sound card modes are
about the only way to go these days. Unless you want to work Pactor,
which is another matter. There is lots of good free software.
It is easy to build your own computer-to-radio interface, or there are
a wide variety of store-bought ones out there.

For software there are the single-mode programs Digipan (PSK) and MMTTY
(RTTY), both for Windows. There are multimode programs MultiPSK (windows
only) and fldigi (windows and Linux and Unix, including Macintosh) and
DM780 (windows only). I won't offer recommendations on the computer-to-
radio interface; I build my own.
