Those are outside the ham band effects, everyone knows the rules change once
one is inside the band edges.

At that point real imaginary standing waves become virtual imaginary
standing waves.

True. Terman shows the details of a "standing-wave detector for a
coaxial line." on page 105 of his 1955 edition. It`s a slotted (trough)
line.

Without a reflected wave there would be no interference pattern which as
Dave points out can be observed with the naked eye in some stringed
instruments, especially with the help of a good photographic series.


A frequency adjustable strobe light can also be useful for demonstrating
the effect.
